The NatureLed™ Certified Practitioner Pathway

Your clients have a critical gap in their foundation.

Become the practitioner  equipped to treat it.

Most clinical training makes a critical mistake: It rarely asks you to consider what was never built — or why. Which leaves a gap that is often at the heart of why your most complex clients plateau.

A certification you earn through depth, connection and mentoring.

You see it in the clients who work hard but the skills don't carry over.

The kids who can't regulate outside the therapy room. The adults whose skills improve in the clinic but dissolve in real life. A foundational piece is missing — and the standard model keeps trying to build a second floor before the foundation is there.

Your client's foundation isn't a mystery. Human development — regulation, coordination, executive functioning, resilience, attention, belonging, mental wellness — is built through very specific reciprocal, sensory-rich interactions with the living world. Interacting with nature isn't just enrichment — it is the biological medium through which human capacity is constructed in the first place.

When that medium has been largely absent from a client's life, their foundation is incomplete. And when it is absent from clinical training, practitioners are left trying to rehabilitate what was never habilitated — without a framework that explains the difference, or what to do about it.

You were trained in evidence-based practice. You document, adapt, and problem-solve. You are skilled, committed, and creative! But still — your clients plateau. Your most meaningful goals stall. Work that you once felt excited to wake up for is starting to feel dull and ineffective.

Your frustration isn't burnout. It is the correct response to an incomplete model.

NatureLed™ is a more complete model — it begins with biological understanding, translates to clinical language, and builds the practical tools to actually address what your clients need at the root.

Other trainings hand you a recipe. NatureLed™ teaches you to cook.

NatureLed™ doesn't tell you to go outside before equipping you with a deep ecological understanding of why outside is where we are designed to become human — and to engage that understanding wherever you practice.

"Yes chef!"

Rather than handing you a recipe, NatureLed™ teaches you how to cook with what is already alive around you — the slope of the land, the way light moves through leaves, the textures underfoot, the pauses between birdsong. You learn to work with the living ingredients of your own place, and to let those ingredients shape your clinical reasoning — so you can reason your way through any client behavior, in any setting, without a script.

While other programs focus on getting clients outside to play — a beautiful and necessary beginning — NatureLed™ goes deeper: how environmental context works directly with the nervous system, shaping perception, regulation, movement, capacity, meaning, and participation over time.

Nature is no longer seen a backdrop. It becomes your collaborator.

 Four levels. One certification arc.

Each level builds on the skills from the last, and each one you complete is marked — a certificate, contact hours, and from Level 2 onward, a NatureLed™ badge to display. You may be taking a course, but you are also working toward a credential.

Recognizes your personal embodiment of the core routines — the internal work of moving out of system overload and establishing the foundational sensory practices required to lead others.

NatureLed™ Applied Practitioner Badge

Awarded upon completion of Level 3 — the core certification

Signifies mastery of the Applied NatureLed™ Framework: defending nature-integrated practice through the lens of the OTPF-4, defensible documentation, and rigorous outdoor risk-assessment protocols.

Certificates document AOTA-approved contact hours and CEUs where courses are approved. NatureLed™ badges are a NatureLed™ Institute designation and are not issued by or affiliated with AOTA. The assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures by AOTA, or AOTA approval of a certification or other professional recognition.

This pathway is for you if:

  • You are an OT, OTA, OT student, or allied health professional
  • You don't see the kind of gains in your clients as you think they can have and you want to understand why
  • You want to understand how sensory processing, emotional regulation, environment and behavior work together
  • You work in a traditional setting and want tools — and clinical language supervisors and insurers will respect
  • You are experiencing burnout and want a sustainable path forward

This might not be the right fit if:

  • You want a one-size-fits-all set of outdoor activities to add to your existing toolkit
  • You want a quick certification without deep clinical integration
  • You are looking for a business course
  • You love being inside a clinic and don't want to be outside with your clients
  • You want a program that tells you exactly what to do in each session

What practitioners say

"NatureLed™ gave me the confidence to really be the OT in the room — to expand beyond just handwriting and feel certain about my role as an occupational therapist. I now see my setting differently. I see my clients differently. I see myself differently."

Claire W., OTD
Occupational Therapist

"NatureLed™ completely shifted how I see nature in my practice. I used to think of it as a tool or resource, but now I see it as a foundational part of who we are as humans. I feel much more confident advocating for nature as a primary part of occupational therapy, because I see its impact on regulation, connection, and participation every single day."

Elizabeth D., OTD
Occupational Therapist

"The training helped us support tough behavior instead of just deal with it. So many aha moments. Our staff feels more confident working with neurodiverse learners. It made my job easier because it made my staff's job more effective."

School Director
California outdoor school

I wasn't ahead of the field by accident. I was paying attention to what I was seeing.

1996 — Senior OT thesis: "The Loss of Biodiversity and Its Impact on Human Health." Before "nature-based therapy" existed as a phrase, the research was already pointing toward one conclusion: nature is not a therapeutic tool. It is a necessary condition for human health.

1996–present — Three decades of OT practice across every clinical setting. Early intervention, public schools, clinics, home health, nursing homes, community programs, outdoor schools. Across all of them, the same pattern: interventions failing because the environmental context for being human had been ignored.

2003 — Co-founded a nonprofit for nature-connected family health. Teaching parents and community how sensory engagement, movement, curiosity, and outdoor exploration are essential for growing healthy humans — long before this language entered clinical discourse.

2005 — Began co-facilitating workshops with Jon Young and 8 Shields Institute. Teaching at multi-day, large and small group workshops nationally and internationally.

Now — The NatureLed™ Pathway, built for the profession I fell in love with years ago: OT NatureLed™ exists so you don't have to choose between evidence, ethics, and what you intuitively know works. It gives language, structure, and clinical grounding to what practitioners already sense: reconnecting people with the living world isn't extra. It's foundational.

Say yes to a more meaningful way of practicing, leading, and living.

Stepping beyond traditional systems requires a broader lens. If you're hesitating, it's likely because you're thinking responsibly: How do I meet goals without it looking unstructured? How do I manage safety, risk, and liability? How do I explain this to supervisors and administrators who think it might look like playing — without adding complexity to an already full workload?

You need clear frameworks, clinical reasoning, and practical systems that make this work ethical, effective, and defensible in real-world settings. That is exactly what this pathway was built to provide. You don't need to be an outdoor expert to start — you already know how to assess risk, document goals, and create safety. The pathway shows you how to apply those same skills beyond four walls, within real constraints: limited gear, tight schedules, changing conditions. Often it reduces effort, because nature shares the load.

And at a moment when technology and AI are rapidly reshaping healthcare, NatureLed™ strengthens the very things that make OT the profession of the future: embodied presence, perceptual attunement, relational regulation, real human participation in real environments. Rather than competing with technology, NatureLed™ practice clarifies and elevates the distinct value occupational therapy brings.

Reminding you why you became an OT in the first place.

The broken model won't fix itself.

Another year practicing from a fractured model means the same plateaus, the same stalled goals, the same slow drain on the part of you that chose this profession because you believed in working with the whole person. You don't have to keep practicing from a place of fracture — and you don't have to figure it out alone. The certification arc starts with 90 minutes.
