You add a visual. You loop in the social-emotional curriculum. You adjust the sensory diet. And you wonder if you're furnishing the second floor of a house that doesn't have a foundation.
More than 1 in 4 American children now carries a special health care diagnosis. Anxiety and depression became the leading cause of disease burden worldwide years ahead of projection.
We keep trying better strategies — But — It isn't a strategy problem.

What you walk away with
A clearer picture at evaluation
One distinction that tells you whether you're rehabilitating a lost skill or building one that was never there — and why the answer changes your whole plan.
The distinction most of the field is missing
Nature-based practice is a real step forward. It is also not the intervention — and the gap between the two is where we see profound growth happen.
Language a professional team can get behind
Grounded in OTPF-4, PEO, and MOHO. You'll be able to defend this to a skeptical supervisor, not just believe it yourself.
I've spent thirty answsering one question.
It started in OT school, in a lecture on rehabilitating incarcerated adults. I said out loud that we were discussing how to rehabilitate a population that had likely never been habilitated in the first place.
Nobody had an answer. I've been seeking one ever since.
I'm Kathleen Lockyer, OT/L — thirty years as an occupational therapist, thirty years engaging with nature connection as an intervention. I'm the creator of the NatureLed™ Approach and the Ancestral Affordance Model, an AOTA Approved Provider, and the author of Wild Inside (foreword by Holly Ringland, endorsed by Richard Louv). I've presented for the Occupational Therapy Association of California, the Children & Nature Network, the Society for the Study of Occupation, California Audubon, First Five, and many others.
I first taught this material in 2015. Every statistic in it has gotten worse since and the clinical argument has only gotten stronger.
Questions
Do I need to be an OT?
How long is it, and when can I watch?
Is this just "go outside more"?
Do I need woods, or a wilderness site?
What comes next?
The canary isn't the problem.
Miners carried canaries underground because they are particularly sensitive birds and they alarmed early with the danger of a toxic environment.
When the Canary's song went erratic, the miners got out.
Our young generation is singing erratic songs. And they are asking us to help them.
